The first thing that Nombeko decides to purchase with her money is a house; she chooses to buy herself a small shack on the outskirts of town because it offers her very little protection from the elements. Now that she has her house, she will be able to move away from where people can easily see her as a witch or as someone who is against society. She hopes that this will help her to not be attacked or killed by other villagers who might see her as a threat, or by pilgrims who are visiting the town. Nombeko also chooses to take up a job in the mines so she can earn enough money to feed herself and live her life comfortably. The only downfall is that if she is inside of the mines for too long, then she will be unable to collect rain water that falls into the mine shafts. This is why she waits until it rains at night, so she can scoop up as much rain water as possible. She will then use this rain water for cooking, cleaning, and bathing. The second thing that Nombeko decides to purchase with her money is water pipes. She has learned that carrying heavy buckets of water up and down the mineshaft is too much for her to handle on a daily basis. Nombeko buys herself some water pipes that lead into the mine shaft and she places these pipes right near the entrance of the mineshaft.
