Idukki is a popular destination for both native and foreign tourists. The terrain features hills, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, forests and wildlife sanctuaries. The Idukki Dam is known as the "Gateway to Kerala" for people from other states looking for greener pastures. Idukki district is well connected by roads, railways and air. The nearest airports are at Coimbatore (177 km), Madurai (138 km) and Chennai (421 km). There are direct flights to all the major Indian cities. The nearest International Airport is at Kochi, which is 161 km away. Mysore Airport in Mysore, Karnataka, is situated at a distance of 282 kilometres from Coimbatore. Idukki is home to many national highways including the National Highway 466, 68 and 66 which connect it with other major cities including Madurai, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. The nearest railway stations are at Erode (32 km), Tirunelveli (71 km) and Salem (74 km). The nearest major railway station is at Coimbatore (232 km). It can be accessed by road or rail via Coimbatore. The nearest airports are at Cochin (165 km), Kochi (161 km) and Madurai (138 km). Idukki has good connectivity with all the three airports.
